You are now home with your new puppy. You introduce him to his new family. Everything is going well. It’s now time to go to bed. What to do with the puppy. You put him in the garage or basement and close the door. Naturally, your little darling will start to wail and bark. This could annoy you, your children, or worse, your neighbors who might quickly complain specially if it’s past 11:00 pm.

Make sure the crate is not too big. It should be large enough for the puppy’s bed , but no larger. Dogs do not want to soil their bed and the use of a crate teaches them to control their urge to eliminate.

Make him understand that the crate is his new home, not a jail. He is not in it to be punished but to relax, sleep and play. Leave several toys inside it. He must feel at home and secured. At night, put the crate with the dog in it in your bedroom so he can see you. He needs to see you. He will wail if he’s in another room by himself. Put yourself in his shoes. He just lost his mother, his brothers. His surrounding is all new, the people are new, it’s enough to feel lost. He needs to feel secure and not isolated in another room.

After a while, the dog will follow a sleep pattern even if he doesn’t see you. When he feels that you are getting ready to go to bed he will go to his bed also. Remember to praise him each time. Show him you are proud of his good behavior.
