The first 24 hours
THE YORKSHIRE
1. It is important not to disturb the puppy. Give him time to get used to his new home and the people that live in the house.
2. Avoid any contacts between your puppy and other dogs since there could be viruses that could harm the puppy.
3. Small purebred dogs eat in small quantities. It is recommended to give him dry top quality brand food
4. There are several ways to motivate your puppy to eat when he refuses the food you give him. You can dilute his food in warm water to soften it, then mix it with 1 small jar of baby food ( preferable turkey, beef or chicken flavor). You can also buy infant milk and dilute it with his dry food.
5. Remember this little one you just brought home. He needs a lot of love and attention just like a newborn baby. House training is one of the first tasks that every new dog owner will undertake in the introduction of their puppy to its new home. Normally a dog will not soil his sleeping area. You can put your dog in a small cage when you are away. He will feel more secure therefore will hold himself a little longer. However there are exceptions. Just be patient.
6. Your puppy received all the required vaccinations. A log is given to you among the instructions for future care.
7. Provide him with his own toys and teach him to use them or he will destructively chew anything available, such as your furniture, carpet, clothing or shoes. The dog’s chewing is a form of occupational therapy to relieve stress and release energy.
8. Just like a newborn baby, it is important to respect your puppy’s sleep patterns. They are essentials to his growth and prevent hypoglycemia.
